No not the Great Wall of China this time, the London Marathon!  

I have had this mad idea for quite a while now, but last year I actually got around to applying and was fortunate enough to get a place running for St John's Ambulance.  So the last few months have seen me pounding the streets of London, Woking, Clanfield, Torquay and anywhere else I have happened to be for a few days.      

However, this is not just about me and my training through the rain, the cold and the snow. This is not just about me pounding the pavements 800 times a mile, for mile upon mile, week upon week, in order to be in shape to complete the 'race'.

When large crowds gather for public events there needs to be first aid cover to ensure people's safety and wellbeing. St John's Ambulance volunteers are trained in advanced first aid and lifesaving skills and attend thousands of events each year.

In the event of an accident or illness occurring, their volunteers' skills are vital in preventing further harm and saving lives. They provide essential support until the emergency services arrive.

St John's Ambulance provide ambulance, first aid and medical services, tailored to the requirements of each individual event. They provide a whole range of resources including:

• Qualified first aiders;
• Emergency ambulances and crew;
• Emergency vehicles;
• Registered nurses, paramedics and doctors;
• Mobile command and control facilities;
• Mobile treatment centres/field hospitals;
• Cycle response teams.
  

They provide first aid cover across the UK at major events, from premier league football matches to music festivals and sporting occasions.
