Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. Any donations will be hugely appreciated and will greatly benefit the community of Mulyezi.

This summer our group of 9 volunteers will be providing financial and physical assistance for the construction of a 5km road, linking the socio-economically isolated village of Mulyezi, a village with over 2500 inhabitants in the Rumphi district of Northern Malawi, to the main road running through the country. Currently no form of motorised transport can reach the village and even footpaths are rendered impassable during the rainy season. The road will allow the community easier access to further education and healthcare and will make transportation of materials to and from the village much easier. It will also enable access to good markets for the village farmers, as well as allowing easier access to development support. To illustrate the necessity for this road, 40,000 bricks have been moulded for the construction of two junior school blocks in the village, but the project has stalled because of difficulties in transporting materials sourced outside the community.

The project has been proposed by the Mulyezi community through the organisation Development Action for Marginalised Rural Areas (DAMRA). DAMRA are a Malawian Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) who work on development initiatives in many different impact areas including sustainable agriculture, HIV/AIDS awareness and counselling, and advocating gender balance.

As you can see we need to raise £12,000 to pay for the construction of this road. All of this money goes toward the direct costs of the project, paying for the building materials and the labourers' wages. None of the money raised will be spent on any personal travel and living expenses of the volunteers. Volunteers will fund their own flights, vaccinations, food and other such expenses.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to support us: Edinburgh Global Partnerships gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor us now!

Thank you very much for supporting EGP Malawi and the community of Mulyezi.
