Do you know someone with cancer; a sufferer, a parent, a family member, a friend, a carer, young or old?

Moira Kelly died of breast cancer in November 2004 at the age of 40. She was mother to three young girls, two of whom are now at South Wolds Academy (Alice & Emily Wong) whilst Isabel is at Crossdale Drive Primary School. Back in 2005, parents at the primary school organised the first walk in Moira’s memory.

Now in its 10th year, this informal, totally inclusive annual event is an opportunity for self reflection. It gives children, as well as adults, the opportunity to show support for others who may be affected by cancer.

In previous years, pupils, parents and staff at Crossdale Drive Primary School have been joined by family, friends and pets, as well as groups from the wider community, including 4th Keyworth Brownies, 1st Keyworth Scouts (including Cubs and Beavers) and The Wolds Day Nursery. They cycled, scooted, skated, ran or walked around the 5km lake. In the past, we have had wheelchairs, unicycles, and even children walking backwards.  It has been great to see the younger generation showing their support and enjoying themselves (some in their pushchairs or back carriers). The older generation are out in force too! We provide sweets for those that finish! It has always been a great evening to reflect and catch up with friends.

This simple, donation-only event has raised over £6500 in the last nine years. The money raised goes to Cancer Research UK, the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research.

Hope to see you there again this year. So dust off those trainers, walking boots, scooters or bikes and join us for the evening. Come rain or shine we will be there.

The walk is not just for Moira but for all those sufferers and carers out there.

Together we can make a difference.
