We fund life-changing projects to support children & young people

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The inspiration for competing in these events can find its origin in the name of my team 'Jampotters'. Back in 2003 a fellow fire fighter on my watch had set up a charity 'Jampot' to help fund the needs of his 2 sons, Jake and Max, who had both been diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. Eventually as a result of a negligence claim, the 2 boys are now financially well catered for and the name of their charity lives on in the name of my team.

Getting on somewhat at 52, I have derived alot of pride over the funding raised and the physical achievements of my team in these events. I first started leading teams in the 3 peaks challenge in 2003 and for the past 8 years have won the event outright on 6 occasions. In 2007, we set a record for the event at 15 hours and 22 minutes, which included 11 hours for driving.

2010 was the first year I entered a team in both the 3 peaks challenge and then the 4 peaks challenge a week later. Both events are brilliantly organised but without doubt there is a wonderful camaraderie in the 4peaks, which is very influential in persuading you to come back again. The 4 peaks event is organised by a wonderful children's charity called Wooden Spoon. With its origin steeped in the 'Six Nations Rugby' folklore, the charity finances projects nationwide. Earlier in the year I visited one of the local projects financed by the charity, which was the sensory room at the 'Children's Hospice' at Charlton Farm, Wraxall, Bristol. Just one example of the fabulous work being provided by the charity in helping disadvantaged children.

For 2010 we raised in excess of £5,100 for Wooden Spoon and would love to exceed that figure for 2011. To that end numerous events have been planned including another bash at the London marathon, entry of the first Fire Brigade in the 'Welsh Castles Relay' on 11/12 June, a 3 hour ladder climb on 30th April and a barn dance on 5th Feb.

All my team are fire fighters from Avon Fire & Rescue Service and the added pressure I have placed on their shoulders for 2011 is to try and win the 3 peaks challenge and defend their title in the 'Fastest Team' category in the 4 peaks. Due to a change in dates, both events will have to be tackled back to back in the same week, which will be particularly gruelling.

If any companies wish to sponor my team by having their logo emblazoned on our team shirt as in picture or team vehicle, please contact me at michael.collin@avonfire.gov.uk.
