6 members of the Bellamy Family will be trekking up Mount Kenya in August to both achieve a landmark experience for each of us personally and at the same time raise crucial funds for the very worthy charity of CRASH. Nigel, Hilda, Peter, Gemma, Lucy and Jordan Eve have started their punishing training regime assisted by regular intakes of tea and bacon sandwiches to sustain us along the way.

After flying to Nairobi and a truck ride into the outback, we will start our trek in the hot jungles of the lower slopes of Mount Kenya and over a 6 day period of gruelling climbing move up through the various climatic ranges ending up on the glacier at the summit at minus 20 degree temperatures. The change in vegetation and wildlife as we climb progressively will be interesting to experience up close.

On our way, we will climb through woods and desert areas seeing all around us the exotic wildlife of Africa as we push ever onwards and upwards.

We will have to take all necessary equipment to suit all the different temperatures on our route, shorts and t-shirts to start with and our warm 8build Halley Hansen jackets which will be very welcome as the temperature falls after day 4.

Steve Wilson will be our trek leader and we will be accompanied by 9 other crazy people in our party who like a mad challenge, wouldn’t a luxurious beach holiday be a better summer pursuit for a sensible person?

Each night we will camp at known stopping points and take stock of the days events before a well earned sleep.

After reaching the summit we will come down the much steeper other side of the mountain through bamboo forests and the many lakes that litter the area on our way back to civilisation and a hot bath.

What a great way to see Africa and earn some much needed funds for CRASH!
