Story
The Marathon des Sables in the Sahara of Morocco is said to be the toughest footrace on earth. In 2010, competitors have to cover a record distance of 250 kilometres in six stages; they need to carry all their food, clothing and sleeping bag for the event themselves, only 9 litres of water a day are supplied by the race organizers. Challenges are the extreme heat (up to 50 degrees), cold at night, endless sand dunes, rocky mountains, sand storms, blisters, sun burn, scorpions, camel spiders, diarrhoea and dehydration, to mention just a few.
I dedicate my race to the brave children and families of the SOS Children's Villages of El Salvador, Central America. I lived in this beautiful country during its civil war in the 1980s and witnessed the important work this organization is doing. For thousands of orphaned children, the SOS Children’s Villages provide a safe shelter, a family, medical service and an education. Although the civil war ended in 1992 and the country has seen moderate prosperity, new suffering was caused by earthquakes, hurricane Mitch and an increasing gang criminality.
