Story
On the 24th March I will be running in the London Landmarks Marathon raising money for Group B strep support.
Since becoming parents we have become good friends with Rob and Kim Harte who tragically lost their first born daughter Grace to the infection. They are an inspiration and do fantastic things to raise awareness of GBS. Rob is also running!
The NHS could test all women in the latter stages of pregnancy and if found to be positive at this time all that's required to keep the baby protected is 'dirt cheap' IV antibiotics in labour. Unfortunately standard testing is not something the NHS currently provides.
There is private testing available that can be purchased through the GBSS website for as little as £35 that all pregnant women can do at home and provides an accurate result.
The money raised will go someway to help fund more information to be given to parents during pregnancy to raise more awareness of GBS.
Any donation, however small, will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading.
Group B Streptococcus is the UK's most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies and of meningitis in babies under age 3 months. On average in the UK, at least-two babies a day develop a group B Strep infection -one baby a week dies from their GBS infection, and-one baby a week survives with long-term disabilities – physical, mental or both.Yet most group B Strep infections are preventable.
