Story

I will attempt to complete a "Great Glen Triathlon" in less than a week with three friends. The Great Glen is a sequence of lochs and rivers that cuts diagonally across Scotland from Inverness and through the Highlands to Fort William. Our challenge will be to cycle the length of the Great Glen on hill trails from east to west, climb Ben Nevis, and then return to Inverness by canoe. It's a 150 mile round trip and we're tackling it the hardest way we could think of. This is why...

In December 2012 my friends James and Alice brought into the world a lovely baby boy, Arthur Byron. It soon became clear that Arthur was highly vulnerable to brain seizures which struck regularly and with ferocity, often lasting for several hours. James and Alice were taught how to resuscitate little Arthur, and life for the family became a cycle of harrowing seizures and protracted stays in intensive care, punctuated by precious moments together at home, never sure when the next seizure would occur but certain that it would.

After a seven-month struggle Arthur died at home in his Mum and Dad's arms. Alice gave a heartbreaking eulogy at Arthur's memorial service. In it, she spoke about Arthur's suffering but also about his fighting spirit - how despite spending much of his short life in pain, on drugs or both, he had strived, as all babies do, to practise and learn how to do little things by himself.

As I'm sure you can imagine, a lot of people wanted to comfort and support James and Alice after their loss. Few if any of us knew how. So when James suggested that he'd like to organise a fundraiser in Arthur's memory I was only too happy to sign up.

Please help me to raise money for Epilepsy Research UK in the hope that their invaluable work will one day prevent others from suffering as Arthur and his parents did.
