I am raising money for Brain Tumour Research in memory of my mum, June Fuller, who died in 1999 from an inoperable brain tumour. 

Mum first suffered from a brain tumour in 1985, when I was 12 years old. This had remained undetected for some time while her health steadily worsened, until a sequence of fairly dramatic events led to the diagnosis of the cause. We nearly lost her in '85, but during the course of an incredibly lengthy operation, surgeons managed to completely remove (or so they thought) the tumour. It was a remarkable recovery - Mum was back to her old self again.

But 7 years later, the tumour had regrown and was causing major problems again. Another major operation in 1992 and once again Mum was saved and had a new lease of life. 

Another 7 years, and the tumour was back and causing problems again. This time it was too deep and could not be removed by surgery. Radiotherapy also failed to defeat the tumour and we lost Mum in May 1999, aged 61.

As devastating as this was, I have always chosen to focus on the fact that the amazing skills of the NHS surgeons in 1985 and 1992 gave me and my brothers the gift of 14 more years with our mum that we very nearly didn't have. 

Much more work needs to be done to understand brain tumours and to try to develop effective treatments. I am proud to be running my first full marathon in memory of my wonderful Mum and to raise money for this worthy cause.
