Story

Welcome to our JustGiving Page in Memory of Brian Hall. We hope you will donate towards St Peter's Hospice and all the wonderful support they provide. Please take the time to read Brian's story below...

Brian’s multiple cancer diagnoses were not properly recognised until the end of December 2020, by which time he was already very sick and fading away before our eyes.  Given the situation, made so much worse by the pandemic, being cared for outside of our home was never really an option.

It was a very scary scenario for Brian and I, but we were privileged to have been given amazing support from St Peter’s Hospice, whether it was clinical, practical or emotional.  From the initial form-filling visits to the virtual hand-holding I needed over the phone and advice about medication, to the sympathetic personal care Brian received or the eventual all-night vigils by the wonderful hospice nurses, the staff of St Peter’s did their best to make Brian’s last few weeks as bearable as possible for us both.

You are reading this, so you know that Brian was a stoical man who hated to show weakness.  Understanding the nature of their patients is one of the things which makes the hospice so special.  I was with him to the last, which was probably the hardest thing I have ever had to do, but following the single-minded insistence of our principal St Peter’s nurse, our son Oliver and his partner Belinda were also in the house which was a massive comfort to me.

Until a few short weeks ago, like most people I know, I had very little idea of what a hospice is or the vital role that hospices play in the community at the end of so many lives.  It is hard to believe that they are 80% funded by charity donations.  It was Brian’s wish that anyone wanting to make a meaningful gesture in his memory should make a donation to St Peter’s Hospice.  We hope to raise at least £1,408 which is the amount needed to fund the sort of at-home support Brian received.

Thank you in advance for helping the hospice and for remembering Brian,

Sincerely yours, Julie.
