We are fighting to make a world where diabetes does no harm

Story

The Alloa ladies have decided to put their running trainers on once again and participate in the Alloa Half Marathon in honour of our late friend Chanel Alexander who sadly lost her battle with Diabetes Type 1 in November 2012.  Chanel was naturally a caring individual she provided care for young adults within the Clackmannanshire area, provided care for children in South Africa, and most importantly she provided care and advice for others who suffering from Type 1 Diabetes all around the Scotland Area.

We have decided that any funds raised through the Just giving page and our sponsor sheets will specifically go to a family and children's event held in Ayr in September as we know this is something Chanel would be passionate about as it involves providing care, knowledge and understanding of managing the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes.

Please read the below passage which details specifically what the funds raised can do to benefit children, young adults and families.

"The aim of the Family Support Week-End is to give children with diabetes and their families time away from home to learn more about diabetes and gain support from Health Care Professionals and others who are living with the same condition. The events give the children the chance to take part in fun activities, meet other children with diabetes and develop their self confidence and independence. The families all learn more about management of diabetes, encouraging children to gain the skills to self manage and helping parents develop the confidence to give their children more freedom.

Children are placed in age-related Groups with specially selected Volunteer and engage in external sports and social activities, have structured teaching input and are given opportunities to learn practical management of diabetes by Health Care Professionals, Volunteers and from each other, under supervision.

Parents and carers had very wide-ranging information sessions on all aspects of diabetes management and many opportunities to share experiences and points of view, relevant to their personal circumstances. Small groups also had interaction with Specialist Diabetes H.C.P’s , including a Psychologist.

The management of diabetes can be complicated and there is no break from it; being a parent orcarer of a young person with diabetes can be emotionally draining and the support provided at the Family Support Weekends allowed them to talk about the challenges amongst a group of other people who are going through similar stages."

May I take this opportunity in advance to thank everyone for making a donation, its very much appreciated.

Yours Sincerely – The Alloa Ladies

Xx
