Story

Charlie’s challenge

This is Charlie – he is nine years old and is hoping to run a marathon in 5km splits (Park Runs). He would like to use this opportunity to raise money for charity. When asked which charity he would like to support he chose “The Sacha Gauci Remembrance Fund”.

Sacha was just two years old when he died from an undiagnosed rare, aggressive brain tumour. At the time of Sacha’s death Charlie was 4 years old. They had always known each other, and our families were close. The death of Sacha – an extremely beautiful, smiley little boy affected many families in our community. His parents wanted some good to come from his tragic passing, and so chose to support World Child Cancer in his memory. Over the past 5 years that fund has raised over £46,500 for children with cancer who live in Balantyre, Malawi and do not have access to curative or palliative medication. Sacha is never far from our minds and every time our daughter (just 6 weeks younger than Sacha) learns a new thing, moves classes, makes friends we feel Sacha’s absence – knowing that he would be right there alongside her if he were still with us. Sacha’s parents and their other son have had to battle through a grief that none of us want to experience. They are amazing people, and this support is in part a tribute to them.

I am not sure why Charlie chose Sacha’s fund as a charity to support, but I am so proud that he did. I would love it if you could support Charlie in his marathon ambition. To make the challenge even more tricky, he wants to beat his personal best time of 26 minutes and 28 seconds. Charlie will run every Saturday (unless he is poorly, or we are away) whether he “feels” like it or not. This is, after all, a test of endurance and determination. He would like to raise £50, but can you imagine the difference even more money would make? The children it would help through World Child Cancer and the seed of inspiration that it would plant in Charlie’s heart to “do more for others”. Please give as little or as much as you are able. Thank you so much.
