Sunflowers for Ukraine appeal

Chorleywood for Refugees is raising money for Disasters Emergency Committee

Sunflowers for Ukraine · 13 March 2022

More than 10 million people have fled their homes to escape conflict in Ukraine. Leaving behind jobs, belongings and loved ones, they need shelter, food and water. Donate now.

Story

Sunflowers are the national flower of Ukraine.

Chorleywood4Refugees are giving sunflower seeds to gift or to plant in your own garden or pot, as a sign of solidarity and hope for the people of Ukraine.

We would like the gardens of Chorleywood and further afield to be filled with sunflowers this summer as a sign of our support for Ukraine and a sign of welcome to refugees coming here.

If you would like to consider making a donation to our fundraiser it will be hugely valued.

Donations are for the Disasters Emergecy Committee (DEC), Ukraine Humainarian Appeal which is supporting the more than 3 million people who have already been forced to flee their homes as a result of the conflict in their homeland.

  • £30 could provide essential hygiene supplies for three people for one month
  • £50 could provide blankets for four families
  • £100 could provide emergency food for two families for one month

Planting tips for your sunflower seeds

  • Plant your seeds when the danger of frosts has passed in a sunny spot 12 mm deep, at least 10 cm apart.
  • Cover the seeds carefully with soil and water them gently.
  • As they grow, if the plants are crowded, thin them out to about 45cm apart, leaving the strongest tallest plants.
  • Be careful, as slugs and snails like to eat the new shoots of sunflower seeds! You can protect the seedlings by cutting the top off a plastic bottle and placing it over your seedlings.
  • As your sunflower begins to grow tall, place a cane near the stem and loosely tie the cane to the plant with string.
