Story

Thanks for reading my page!

I am fundraising for this charity as it is very close to mine and my family’s heart.

Founded by my auntie Kay (Duffy) in January 1998 after my uncle Frankie had a successful liver transplant in 1995, the RVH Liver Support Group offers support and understanding not only to patients, but to relatives and friends. Working closely with medical teams, the group complements and extends the support provided already by professional staff.

The Groups Fundraises;

• To provide medical equipment for the liver wards and outpatients’ clinic.

• For financial assistance for research projects.

• To contribute to the liver unit’s education fund.

The Group educates by;

• Raising awareness of the great need for donors, particularly the current acute shortage of organs for transplantation.

• Raising awareness of and combat the stigma associated with liver disease in all its forms.

A network of volunteer liver patients and their carers provide support, non-medical advice and information for all those coping with liver disease via;

• Free and confidential advice and understanding,

• A listening ear, whether one phone call or long term support.

• Literature and leaflets focussing on many different aspects of liver disease.

• Financial assistance in certain circumstances in line with strict criteria.

• Help and support at any time

Sadly our uncle Frankie passed away 7 years ago. He was a wonderfully kind and caring man and is greatly missed. Both my aunt and uncle worked so hard fundraising and volunteering for the charity, turning their own misfortune into positivity, providing support and advice to patients with liver disease and their families. Their children Collette, Nuala and Ciaran, in addition to their families and the wider family circle, continue the legacy and fundraising for the charity today.

Since 1998 the RVH Liver Support Group has been very successful in raising much needed funds to help patients and assist with provision of medical equipment. This year marks the 20th Anniversary and I would like to raise money to contribute to the £207,000 already raised by The Group.

I am running the Dublin Marathon on the 28th October, not only in my uncles memory but as a tribute to the tireless work and dedication by auntie Kay and all the volunteers for this fantastic charity. My aunts tireless efforts and selflessness have been recognised by Buckingham Palace on the 2018 honours list and she will soon be awarded an OBE. I know how proud uncle Frankie would be of the charity’s achievements and of his beloved wife’s.

Auntie Kay, this one’s for you.X
