Story
Dementia UK is a nationwide charity helping to support those families who are affected by Dementia. Sadly dementia affects over 850,000 people alone in the UK and over 23 million of the UK population know a close family or friend who is living with Dementia. Symptoms of Dementia can include severe memory loss, communication problems and mood swings. Those living with Dementia can find it difficult and so WE WANT TO HELP CHANGE AND SUPPORT THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS MORE PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA IN 2015.
Here are 4 reasons why you should support Dementia UK:
- Dementia in the UK costs the economy £23 billion a year - more than cancer and heart disease together - but sadly not enough funding is raised to help support all of those families affected throughout the UK. Along with another 13 students, we are trekking and travelling down some of the length of the Great Wall of China in aid of Dementia UK in August 2015. We will be trekking for up to 9 hours a day in 40 degree heat and 80% humidity. It is going to be a touch trek but it is nothing compared to what those living with Dementia face.
- The money that I will fundraise will help go towards supporting families by providing specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses every step of the way. Admiral Nurses work collaboratively with health and social care professionals to improve the experiences of those affected by dementia. They offer individualized support for families and carers and those affected by Dementia.
- My Grandmother had dementia which eventually lead to a stoke and she sadly passed away. Over a few years her memory deteriorated - She did not have the most severe form of dementia but every journey is unique. I feel raising money for Dementia is so very much needed so that families can get the individual support that they truly need.
- Currently in my hometown on the Isle of Wight there are no nurses to support the hundreds of older people and their families who might be affected by Dementia at some point. Sadly this is the case in many areas of the UK but supporting Dementia UK can help make this change. Families shouldn't face Dementia without specialist support, advice or someone to talk too. There should be support for every family to help them and their loved one so they can live as positively as possible with Dementia.
