Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Kevin/Dad passed away on Thursday 30th January 2020 after an eight and a half years battle with vascular dementia.  So many families are affected by this illness. We are all aware how cruel a condition this is.  It robs family and friends of their loved ones and it robs the person of who they really are.

As a lot of you will know Kevin was a key driver of Direct Wine Shipments for many years. He was a vibrant, enthusiastic, creative and funny man. He loved life, wine, music, family and friends in equal measure.

He will be greatly missed by his wife Carol, by his children Caroline, Peter, Neal and Laura, and grandchildren Natalie, Luke, Ben, Joe, Rory, Lucy, Ruby, Jude, Noah and Ruben.

Alzheimer's Society fund 2 research projects in Northern Ireland.

Dr Bernadette McGuinness at Queen’s University, Belfast is carrying out research investigating links between inflammation and dementia.  She is testing whether people who use particular arthritis drugs that reduce inflammation have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.  If these links are proven, they could become a new treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.  This drug re-purposing could bring a new treatment in half the time of developing a new drug from scratch.

 Dr Bernadette McGuinness has said,
"This new funding from Alzheimer’s Society will help us make real progress in understanding the potential of anti-inflammatory drugs for people with dementia.  If this project is successful it will pave the way for a clinical trial to test whether these drugs can slow, or stop Alzheimer’s disease in people who don’t have arthritis."

Professor Kevin Brazil, also at Queen’s University has developed a way of supporting families to make decisions about care.  This involves informing family of their options, helping them engage with health care providers and informing them to help make difficult decisions on end of life care options. They have funded Professor Brazil to develop educational material and guidelines so this tool is widely adopted to improve care for people with dementia.

Professor Brazil and his team will involve 15 community
health care providers, 131 family carers and 36 care home staff in this
project.

Alongside this work, and the many other funded research places at universities across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, Alzheimer’s
Society is a founding funder of the UK Dementia Research Institute.  They have committed to raise £50m for this transformative initiative, making breakthroughs in brain science to find a cure.

This is a very worthwhile cause if you can spare a few pounds.

Thank you
