Galway to Cork : 420mile Bike Ride in 5 days for both the Irish and UK MND (Motor Neurone Disease) Association.

On 15th July, 7 cyclists ( of all shapes and sizes ) will be riding part of the wild Atlantic way from Galway to Cork in Ireland taking 5 days to ride approximately 420miles. The money that will be raised will be divided between both the Irish and UK MND Associations.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones or nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. MND can affect any adult at any age. MND is an incurable disease. It is  rapidly progressive, fatal, and approximately half of people with MND die within 14 months of diagnosis

In the UK, the number of people who develop MND each year is about two in every 100,000 people, and currently 7 in every 100,000 people are living with MND in the UK. In Ireland, approximately 80 people develop MND annually, and there are around 200 people affected by the condition at any time.

People living with MND and their families face many challenges and it is important that they can get access to vital support and care when and how it is needed. Your kind donations will make a huge difference to everyone’s lives that are affected by this cruel disease. Funds raised will also importantly aid vital research that will hopefully one day will find a cure.

One of the riders, Ryan Willmott, sadly lost his Mum Brenda to MND in 2013. Having seen first hand how horrendous this illness truly is, the family quickly realised how vital support and research was, in the fight against it. The family set up the Brenda Willmott charity tribute fund and so far it has raised over £11,500, all going straight towards research and support to those living with MND .

The cycle sets off from Galway on Day 1, taking 86 Miles to reach Kilkee Co Clare. Day 2 takes them from Kilkee to Dingle Co Kerry, taking on 88 miles. Day 3 sees the lads leave Dingle and head 82 miles along to Waterville. The penultimate day takes them 82 miles from Waterville to Inchigeelagh Co Cork and finally, the last stretch of the calves leads them 50 miles into Cork City, the final stop.
