My mom died suddenly, nearly 10 years ago, from alcohol related complications. I was 26 at the time, living and working in the UK, and my brother was 16. By the time I was able to get on a plane back home (to South Africa), she had slipped into a coma, and she passed 2 days later. It changed our lives forever. My gran (who had been fighting cancer and was winning) had to bury her daughter, and we, had to bury our mom. The following year, my gran passed away. 

My mom had been drinking for years, and over time, the alcohol had created anger, frustration and desperation for us as a family. We had all gone into survival mode- daily, hourly, we did not know who we would be speaking to. And the most heart breaking feeling is that my mom, the person when she wasn't drinking alcohol, was the most amazing, giving, loving, kind, thoughtful, fun woman. 

I wish (looking back with 20:20 vision) we had known of, or had access to the support services that an organisation like AddAction offer like intervention and rehabilitation. It may just have altered the course of life, and my mom would still be alive to spend time with her grand children, but instead, my children will never know the beautiful person that was my mom. 

Alcoholism is a horrible and complex issue which tears families apart over time.

isolated and in need of support

risk of drug or alcohol addiction with a specialist six-week programme.
