As a relatively new MAMIL (Middle Aged Man In Lycra) who has taken up the pursuit of biking, I thought I'd figure out a physical challenge to give myself a goal and help a great cause.

From the 18th of June I'm participating in a 5 day bike ride from Geneva to Nice with a daily distance of around 130 km / 80 miles and daily climbing of 2600 meters / 8500 ft. In total that's about 650 km / 400 miles and some crazy mountains. Some of the highlights (as our athletic guide calls them...) are Col du Gran Colombier, Mont Ventoux, Col d’Eze, Col de Braus, Col de la Madone. In short, it's going to be a ridiculous and awe inspiring challenge for me.

In order to generate some greater good from all of this effort I am aiming to raise money in memory of Chloe Mansfield, the daughter of a good friend who passed away while still only a baby in London - and also in recognition and support of the unbelievable care and professionalism of all the doctors, nurses and support staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital who treated her.

Chloe was born on 22 February 2012 and all was great, but at the age of only 11 weeks Chloe suffered a massive respiratory collapse, and was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Whilst Chloe survived this initial collapse, she would never again breathe unassisted. Chloe was subsequently diagnosed as having a rare and incurable lung condition, and finally passed away on her nine-month birthday. I am told that during her 6 months in hospital Chloe received the most fantastic care and treatment that could be expected.

The money raised from this page will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital. They are in great need of funds in order to continue to provide the amazing treatment, research and care that so many sick children need.
