Story
My Grampa, Steve, has been diagnosed with a type of Alzheimer's, the exact variety is hard to pinpoint at this early stage but it has already severely affected his quality of life. Because he lived alone for a long time his symptoms were difficult to spot, and he became adept at disguising the struggles he was starting to experience. This became even harder to monitor throughout the pandemic so during one of the various stages of lockdown I took the opportunity to live with him, providing care, companionship and also see first hand how he was coping. I am so grateful to have been able to do this, even though it wasn't easy for either of us, I will cherish these memories of our time together. Steve is now in a wonderful Care Home supported by a fantastic team of compassionate staff, and although it is painful to see his continued decline I am replete with thanks for their dedication to his needs as a patient but most importantly as a person.
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
