As you may know - I was entered into the 2017 Marathon but had to defer my place to this year due to an injury sustained in training.  Now I'm back on the road clocking up the miles.  The below is my story....


I am running the London marathon in 2018 on behalf of Brain Tumour Research in memory of our mum, Kathy Bridge. She had grade 4 GBM (Glial Blastoma Multiforme) which we knew nothing of until a major seizure occurred whilst she was at home on 18th January 2015. She was mis diagnosed as having a stroke and sent home with the usual aspirin. We knew there was something more to it when mini seizures kept happening... and her confused state. After three weeks of battling the GP and consultant at coventry university hospital she got the correct scans which gave us the correct diagnosis. I don't think any of us (that's me, my brother bobby and my sister laura) really took in that what they were trying to tell us, in that mum was being given a life sentence. There were three locations of her brain that had the concentration of "tumour" but it was so interwoven and centred on the Core that surgery and radiotherapy were not an option. I think chemotherapy was offered so we thought there was hope. The chemo tablets actually did nothing to stop the growth and only a massive amount of steroids kept her with us for 4 short months. We nursed her at home, with the help of a local hospice charity that sent some angels round to give us day to day assistance. This is a cruel horrid degrading way to die... and frankly it's shocking that the budget for research is so low in comparison to other cancers.
So that's why I am lacing up my trainers and trying to convince my 37 year old non running legs... that a marathon is a good idea. In honestly I didn't enjoy running. Would go as far as to say I hated it... but you know what? It's empowering that I couldn't run to the end of the road - yet now I can do 6 miles. And as a full time working single mum to two small kids sometimes getting out on that open road and just running... well it's uplifting. Even if I have flat feet, a gammy knee and the elegance of a rhino on full charge.
I couldn't save mum. But I can try and raise money to help save others.
