Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The London Marathon is one of the world's greatest sporting events - not just for the physical challenge, but also because it is the world's biggest one-day annual fundraising event. In 2017, over 40,000 competitors took part in the iconic race. In this context, I am proud to take part of the Royal Museums Greenwich running team and to raise money to ensure a sustainable future for the Cutty Sark.

Cutty Sark is the world's sole-surviving tea clipper, the fastest and greatest of her time. Launched in 1869 she was celebrated for her famous 19th century design which enabled her to break records for speed, size and sail strength, the unique streamlined shame of her hull and iron frame creating more space for her precious cargo. When we imagine a sailing ship in all her glory, it is the image of the elegant clipper that is most likely to be visualised.
A fine example of innovation back in the 19th century as well as today, the Grade I listed vessel became part of Royal Museums Greenwich in 2016, now responsible for her care and conservation.
Whilst intended for only 30 years of service, Cutty Sark has survived 148 years, 2 World Wars and a great fire. She has been repurposed on several occasions; from tea clipper to wool shipper, from training Navy cadets to standing today as a proud memorial to the Merchant Navy. A true survivor of the seas - having braved storms, the perilous waters of Cape Horn, war, fire, murder and mutiny - she continues to tell stories of life on board through educational activities for schools and an expanding programme of family events and has been recognised with a Sandford Award for Excellence in Heritage Education.
As a nation we are fortunate to have such a diverse historic landscape made up of palaces, castles, cathedrals and houses, but in addition, a variety of historic ships. Amongst these vessels, probably none have as many sea miles as Cutty Sark, so it remains a true national treasure, enriching London's skyline as a glorious monument to the age of sail.

The money donated by you will go towards the ongoing preservation of this historic vessel, in order to ensure a sustainable future for the Cutty Sark. The ship's age, weather conditions and general wear and tear mean that all parts of the vessel need regular attention from our skilled team of ship technicians and volunteers.
