My name is Julia, I'm doing a BA in Sociology & International Relations at the University of Leeds and this summer I'll be taking part in the International Citizen Service (ICS) programme in Rwanda :)
I will spend about 10 weeks in the country, living with a local family and working together with a team of volunteers from Rwanda and the UK. Needless to say, I am EXTREMELY excited about it. I'm passionate about the issues of social justice and international development and I'd love to go into that field once I graduate. For the past two years I have been on the committee for a global development society PIN Students. Moreover, I am really interested in the history, politics and culture of the African continent. Visiting East Africa, and Rwanda specifically, has been my dream for a long time.
The programme I'm taking part in - ICS - is a British government scheme, affiliating a number of international development organisations that send volunteers to work for small, local NGOs in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The organisation I'm going to be volunteering for is International Service. It focuses on reducing inequalities, promoting human rights and empowering marginalised social groups such as women, youth, children and disabled people.
In order to take part in the programme and contribute to their fantastic work, I need to fundraise 800 pounds in three months! It is a great challenge but I believe with you help is possible. Any donations, big or small, will be very much appreciated.
Thank you very much,
