On Sunday 23rd May 2021 four of us are taking part in a cycling event known as the 'Struggle' in the Yorkshire Dales, this is one of the UK's hardest sportives, set in the beautiful but brutal Yorkshire Dales landscape.
We are raising money for a solar PV system, to power a new school in the Lungi area of Sierra Leone.
Lungi Charity started building a Secondary School in Lungi Sierra Leone in January 2020 with a view to create a school of excellence, to give the children the opportunity to achieve, to dream of a better life through education. In the area there are schools, but the standard is low, the classes overcrowded, and there is little chance of attaining the entry level required for any onward education.
We hope the new school will help remedy the situation. Construction began with the purchase of a jungle covered plot last January and is now up roof height with the bricks and mortar - ready for the roof timbers and zinc to be added. The villagers have played a big part in the build to date. The mood behind the school construction is extraordinarily positive.
The hope is to install a computer lab in an effort to make this new school as up to date as possible, allowing the children to excel in their studies.
The new building consists of seven classrooms, computer lab, staff room/office, and solar power room, and there will be an outside toilet block.
About the event: This iconic sportive begins in the spa town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire; The route is 108 miles long taking in 9430ft over seven climbs. This tough sportive route has claimed cult status nationwide, with riders travelling hundreds of miles year after year to tackle the gruelling challenge. Cycling Weekly reviewed it as: "One of the best sportive events in the UK."
