Story

Welcome to my fundraising page.

I’m not very good at asking for money which is strange coming from someone who spent two years fundraising for Marie Curie, I have set up this page as a bit of an afterthought as it would be great if others could benefit from the challenge I have set myself.

My main goal this year was to improve my lifestyle and fitness, I was inspired to do this for a three reasons.   Firstly because I have always wanted to become healthier and fitter but I’m easily distracted by wine and good food, which is ok in moderation.  I have two young kids and always thought the easier option was to relax on the sofa once they were tucked up in bed.  I have discovered that incorporating regular (rather than very sporadic!) exercise has actually made me feel more energised and helped me deal with two active kids.

The second kick up the backside was my brother in law suffered a very bad health scare in the second week in January, it looked like we might lose him and I thought if that can happen to big Dave who is fit and healthy, I need to get my finger out and look after myself.

The third reason I decided to go for it was being lucky enough to attend a talk with the British team of ex service men who recently trekked to the South Pole with Prince Harry to raise funds in the name of “Walking with the Wounded”.  Their stories were inspirational and really made me realise what people are willing to do not only to raise money but to maintain a normal life and achieve goals which many able bodied people might not even consider.  Sounds corny, but meeting them and chatting to them afterwards was a life changing experience, and I was only there for the complementary wine and nibbles.  They challenged us to do something out of our comfort zone and the chat on the way to the pub after words was why should we bother?  But it got me thinking….

I have always fancied getting into running, but I never thought I could handle it so I thought why not give it a go.  Promptly downloaded a running plan (rearranged it in a nice table, colour coded of course, my OCD is another story) and aimed to be able to run for 30 mins without stopping.  First attempt I barely managed the 1 min run 90 seconds walk - 8 weeks later I can run 5k in 30 mins WITHOUT any walking breaks.

I am now entered into a 5k, the Spartan Race and currently undertaking the 50 days to fit challenge (5x50).  More to be added throughout the year.   I feel the fittest and healthiest I ever have in my life and I am proud of myself.  Still suffering the odd wine / food distraction, but that won’t change, life is too short and we really do need some indulgences now and again.

So if you feel like sponsoring me to raise funds for Marie Curie which is a very deserving charity close to my heart, any donations would be appreciated.
