We help the hospital offer a better future to seriously ill children across the UK

Story

In September 2015 my wife and I almost lost our son Luka. Luka had been diagnosed with Bronchiolitis which turned out to be heart failure resulting from an undiagnosed heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. Thanks to medical staff Luka was stabilised, albeit in an induced coma, and we were initially transferred to Glenfield Hospital in Leceister due to a bed shortage in London. We spent 5 weeks there with Luka in the PICU ward followed by the paediatric cardiac ward. We returned to London and have been outpatients at GOSH since, regularly attending the heart failure clinic. All medical staff have been incredibly supportive and we feel very lucky to be in a country with such a free health service, however if there had been more beds in London we may not have had to travel so far to have our son cared for in his critical phase. For this reason I would like to raise money for the new cardiac ward in GOSH. This ward will provide more specialist care and beds for children with cardiac needs such as mechanical devices to support the heart whilst waiting for a transplant. We don't know what the future holds with our son's unpredictable heart condition and God forbid one day he may need this specialised care. There are many children awaiting transplants and with a shortage of organs many die waiting or spend many months, if not years, waiting in hospital supported by medical equipment, drugs and the care and compassion of dedicated, selfless medical staff. With increased resources such as hospital beds and cardiac medical equipment, less children will have to die waiting. Please support this cause by donating to my page.

Many thanks and forever grateful, Leon. Xx
