We support people with cancer in pregnancy to feel less isolated and speak to others

Story

I am going to be doing 9 challenges in 9 months, all for Mummy's Star. My first challenge is the Bangor 10k on 18 October 2014. This is huge for me, simply because I am unfit. However this will also be a huge emotional rollercoaster as it is a town where our Mam lives and me and Mair spent so much time there together. It's going to be emotional. Thanks to friends and family for joining us on this special day. And a special thank you to my boyfriend Matt Vizard who has been so patient in helping me with this training. Matt will also be running the 10k.

My beautiful sister was diagnosed with breast cancer at a time when she deserved to be at her happiest, whilst pregnant.

This was devastating news but the prognosis was good, and with treatment we were all hopeful that she would survive and beat this dreadful disease. Cancer is devastating, but coupled with pregnancy, it unleashes even further challenges, obstacles and so many traumas.

Fortunately Mair continued to be relatively positive throughout the pregnancy, during a very difficult time. She could not wait to meet her baby boy and had already fallen in love with him from feeling his little kicks in her tummy. No doubt these little kicks spurred her on to get through chemo treatment days, when she would feel at her lowest. She also had a beautiful daughter, Martha May to distract her attention from cancer. Martha would play scarf lady as she would dress Mummy's head with pretty headscarves. Mummy was still the most beautiful lady in Martha's eyes.

Mair gave birth to a beautiful baby boy called Merlin (because he is magical) on 24 September 2012. On her journey home from the hospital she sent me a text to say how she had fallen in love with him and that he was 'perfect'.

Merlin and Martha's life with their wonderful Mummy was cut way too short. Mair passed away on 6 December 2012 when Merlin was only a few weeks old.

If you were fortunate to have known Mair you would have felt so safe and comfortable in her presence. She was so compassionate and thoughtful. She could make you laugh. She could make you cry, purely because she had the ability to make you open up like no-one else could. She would be the person in the party talking to the shy person in the corner, wanting to unleash their inner beauty and make them feel good about themselves.

Mummy's Star needed to happen. It is a charity set up by Pete Wallroth, my brother in law. It supports pregnant women through cancer and beyond. We offer a holistic approach, from providing financial support to providing emotional support from others who share a similar experience. For further info please do like us on Facebook and visit our website: www.mummysstar.org

We can't bring Mair back. But she would (is) so proud of this unique charity. She would indeed have been the best person to talk to Mummy's in these situations. She is not here, but her legacy lives on. She shines brightly over us all, and we know, in her own way she is helping Mummy's Star xx
