Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I wanting to raise some money for Parkinsons Isle of Man as they support Parkinson's sufferers and their carers here on the island. So why.....

My dear dad was diagnosed with Parkinsons roughly 2005 at the age of 79. It started with a few stumbles then progressed to stiffness, memory loss, forgetfulness, stooping when walking and then falls got worse and then being admitted to hospital on regular occasions some years later. I remember the day when I had a honest and open chat with the Parkinson's nurse at WSM General Hospital and she explained the journey we where likely to be going though in the coming years. Dad had to go into a home in 2015 and died February 2019, those years of dad being in a home where awful, seeing a intelligent, artistic and lovely man slowly decline will always haunt me. Dad didn't die of Parkinson's but from vascular dementia which was brought on by Parkinson's.

Here's a Facebook post I did back in October 2016 just before his 90th Birthday.

"Close people who really know me, know that I speak from the heart and always put other people first. Lunchtime today I met with Dr Kumar who is Parkinson's specialist. We met over a year ago at Weston general hospital when dad was poorly, anyway today we met again to discuss dad and I sat their in the care home thinking this is the most inspiring and passionate man who really wants to change how we deal with Parkinson's and Dimentia. For him and his assisant to spare the time to come to the home and treat him with dignity when there's no cure but to want to make his life as settled as possible but to know each day is a decline, I've the upmost respect. In his own time he's trying to find a cure with Parkinson's UK. At the end of the meeting I said I was running next years London Marathon for Parkinson's, his eyes lit up and was asking lots of questions, but really I wanted to know more about how to help him, his team and how to get them more support within the NHS. So in the 6months I'll be asking, posting, annoying and pestering all to donate. Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and cancer affects us all. There will be a cure for Parkinson's in around 10years time and Alzheimer's a little less, but yes my father is 90 but it affects even children and our loved ones. Ella asks when grandad is gonna die...... I always say he'll never die in my heart!! His spirit and love will always be with us"

I never got to run the Marathon in the end due to injury. so this event is the next best thing, I doubt I'll complete the event but I'm gonna give it my best shot but getting to Peel (32.5mile) is a must then I'll see where I can get to.
