Story
I am doing the Manchester 10k with my work UKFast and HarperJames
My Grandma has Alzheimer’s and over the last 6-8 years I have seen her gradually decline. She doesn’t speak much now and is unable to look after herself and doesn’t know who I am anymore and won’t remember the photo taken on my profile of her with my mum and uncle. My granddad is her carer for the moment and receives a lot of help from Alzheimer’s support groups that give him some rest-bite care 1 day a week so he can go golfing or meet a friend for a coffee and not have to worry about my grandma as looking after her is full time job as he cannot leave her alone.
Alzheimer’s is a cruel disease but the work that the Alzheimer’s Society do is fantastic in providing support to the individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s but also providing support and information to carers and families.
My target of £500 could pay for 2 sessions for the Alzheimer’s society carers programme for 12 carers. The carers programme offers practical tips and advice to cope with the impact of dementia and gives them information to access local services. This kind of support has been so important for my granddad and my family in understanding how to deal with the illness.
Though I would love to raise £1000 and this could pay for one person to visit a dementia café every week for a whole year providing information and support for people with dementia.
Unfortunately my Grandma won’t know or remember that I am raising money for the Alzheimer’s society but raising money for such a worthy charity helps me to know that other families around the country can get the much needed support and help them to come to terms with the cruel illness and one day hopefully find a cure as although my grandma has not yet passed away from Alzheimer’s the sad reality of this cruel disease is that I haven’t had a grandma in my life for many years.
So please sponsor me any amount will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your support
