Story
Homelessness is a growing crisis and it has devastating effects on peoples lives. The first time I really became aware of the issue was at the age of 14 when I chose to do a project on homeless for a school assignment. As part of my research I volunteered at a winter night shelter put on by my church for homeless people. I can remember the preconceived ideas I had about homelessness and how they completely changed after the first evening that I volunteered. I wasn't aware of the range of complex factors that can cause someone to become homeless which can include relationship breakdown, mental health issues and lack of support networks. Since then I have felt passionate about helping homeless people and have volunteered at different shelters. Homelessness can happen to anyone and if I was in this situation I would want someone to act for me.
