Back in 2001 my little boy Thomas aged 7 was diagnosed with AML Leukaemia. After spending more than 6 months in The Royal Marsden Hospital he was discharged being given the all clear. A short time after we were contacted and asked if Thomas would like to go to Disneyland Paris with the London Taxis on The Childrens Magical Taxi Tour. We accepted the offer and with the kind generosity of the taxi drivers volunteering there time and taxis for the 3 day trip and the financial help from the sponsors we had a magical trip never to be forgotten.
A short time after Thomas relapsed and his Leukaemia returned and sadly passed away the following March. After a couple of years I decided that as a London cab driver myself I wanted to be part of this wonderful trip taking children who had spent a long period in hospital as did my little boy Tom to Disneyland for a once in a lifetime trip.
So I joined the Worshipful Company of Hackney carriage Drivers and started to take other families to Disneyland and making their journey the most memorable 3 days they have ever had, as did our taxi driver Marino. Words fail me when I try explain how special that trip was for us and that is how I would like the families i take to feel.I have participated in the event ever since. I will be taking a family to Disneyland this year just two weeks before my climb.
Each taxi costs approximately £1,400 so I decided that a challenge was in order. I then signed up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. People ask me why I want to do this. Well that's easy to answer everyone tells me Thomas is up there in heaven looking down on me, so the nearest I can get to him is on the highest freestanding mountain in the world. yes I know how crazy that sounds but it makes me feel better knowing i can get close him and doing so hope to raise a lot of money to pay for 1 or more taxis for the 27th trip in 2020 in memory of my little boy Thomas James Chamberlain.
The cost of my trip to Mount Kilimanjaro is being covered by myself and every single penny raised will go to the registered charity The Childrens Magical Taxi Tour to Disneyland Paris.
