Story

My Everest Adventure

Let me introduce myself. I’m am an 18-year-old student currently on a gap year between sixth form and a Sports and Exercise Science degree at Cardiff Met University. I have a passion for sport and play a lot of football. I was planning to travel this year recreationally and for my own leisure hoping to see various corners of this planet. But then I thought ‘why not travel for a good cause?’ ‘Why not do something for someone very dear to me in the process?’. It’s at this point I introduce to you my Nan.

At the young age of 72 my Nan had just come out of the back end of her ‘unofficial gap year’, as she called it, in which both her and my Grandad travelled through France and Spain to where they finally settled for a few months in Alicante. It was 2 years ago when a routine blood check delivered some harrowing and frankly quite shocking news to this otherwise healthy and adventurous pensioner. Chronic Lymphatic Leukaemia or CLL as its more commonly known, was diagnosed by the Dr much to my Nan’s surprise. A form of blood cancer, CLL can be endured for a long period and generally a patient can have a fairly lengthy prognosis. Yet with this all said, and what worries our family the most, is the nature in which a patient can rapidly deteriorate. Things can go from smooth too rough in a matter of weeks if the patient was to become ill. It’s crucial patients remain positive and active to give their bodies the best fighting chance. This is where Leukaemia Care comes into play. After seeing how small simple donations could have, or in the future will, directly help my Nan to have a better chance, I was sure this was the route for me. Allow me to illustrate this by referring you to the picture in my recent updates.

From here I selected a challenge to take on in order to raise a sufficient amount of money for the charity. With the personal goal of raising £3500 for Leukaemia Care, I will be embarking on a 120km, 3-week trek in which me and a team of others will be climbing to Base Camp (5280m) of the largest mountain on the planet, Mount Everest. To give some perspective base camps elevation is held in the same bracket as the summits of Mnt Kilimanjaro and Mnt Kenya. The plan is to leave for Nepal on March 9th, with the hope of raising the majority of the charitable goal by the turn of the New Year.
