Story

Thank you again for your support of my efforts; what happened?

All 23 walkers in our team, together with 13 in support, made it across the UK over all 3 mountains in under 24 hours. We started at 5pm and finished 23 hours 37 minutes later - audited if you are asking!

Ben Nevis was            4315 ft of ascent and 9.7 miles (Reached top in 2hrs 17 mins)

Scafell Pike was         3127 ft of ascent and 4.7 miles  (Reached top in 1hr and 56 mins)

Snowdon was             2735 ft of ascent and 6.4 miles   (Reached top in 1hr 46 mins)

Extraordinary experience, wet and cold on Ben Nevis (Scotland in the summer),  just soaking from 4am to 7.40 am (start to finish) at Scafell Pike –  but even I have to admit Snowdon was spectacular and dry, if however it was freezing and blowing a gale at the top.

Well worth it all, and, beyond all expectation I believe I have raised over £14,000 which will allow the Edinburgh Neuro Oncology unit to run three lab research projects. Their staff are excited by the work they can now do and very grateful to you.

I said in my first letter I know you are likely to receive many requests for sponsorship; thank you again for your donation.  I have been staggered by the response I have had in general and delighted that some new research can now be done.

With best wishes

Sandy

3 peaks in aid of The Edinburgh Centre for Neuro - Oncology

Why is a 54 year old accountant, investment manager and ex amateur jockey going to take on the Three Peak Challenge on Saturday 30 June 2012?

Hills are climbed because they are there. In this case there is a bigger reason. Fiona Walker became ill in Spring 2010; the daughter of our friends Tom and Claire Walker it was confirmed that she had a malignant  tumour in early 2011.  Fiona kept her sense of humour and rarely complained despite many trips to hospital undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy.  She was quite remarkable and an example to us all. Very sadly Fiona at aged 19 died at home on Sunday 27th November 2011.

Truly the greatest of all losses to her family and friends Fiona is much missed but will never be forgotten by all those who knew her.

A group of friends of the Walker family are planning to take part in the Three Peak Challenge (Climbing the three highest Peaks in Scotland, England and Wales, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon within 24 hours) in aid of Charity. My efforts will be directed towards raising funds for the Edinburgh Centre for Neuro – Oncology where specific work is being done on the treatment of gliomas, the specific tumour from which Fiona suffered.

The funds raised will help to fund a specific project assessing the effect of the medication being provided for gliomas on the tumours themselves and the impact of any side effects. A successful fund-raising will allow a research scientist to be employed on this project.

I appreciate that you are asked often to support charitable efforts; that I respect. Should you feel that you can make a contribution I know it will be greatly appreciated; not only will it increase the knowledge of a complicated type of cancer, it will provide the best incentive to ensure I make it up and down these 3 hills of a United Kingdom.

With Kind Regards, Sandy

P.S. (Should you receive more than one e mail from me, or have received an e mail on this subject already, please do forgive me; as a group we have not subjected ourselves to a data cleansing project!)
