Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

As many of you know my nan passed away in 2018, she had Alzheimer's.  She had suffered with Alzheimer's for many years and towards the end deteriorated after a long stay in hospital following an infection.  Alzheimer's took 'nan', she was fighting against this deadly illness.  I remember many days of sitting with her, encouraging her to eat, smile, reminisce but the most treasured memories of nans last few months were with the children. Her eyes lit up when they were around and it was like having nan back again, she hated the thought of Louis crying and would ssshhhhh him to try and smooth, she would smile at any of the boys visiting her and that made our day.

I also work with my individuals who too suffer with Alzheimer's Dementia, similar stories to nans who family would be in turmoil making the decision to place them in a nursing home but knowing that they can not manage all their care needs at home.  This year has been hell for them not seeing their families as it has for many; the worries of if their loved ones will remember them, what if something happens to them, its OK the government saying face calls but people with advanced Alzheimer's do not understand this kind of technology.

Like many others during lockdown it has given us time to put ‘things’ into perspective.  I decided one afternoon after a friend had lost her Granny to the same illness that together we would run a Marathon in their memories whilst raising awareness for many others who are cared for, since then it has developed into 2 Marathons and 2 Half Marathons over the course of a 12 month period all in aid of Alzheimer’s Research.

We at Kents Hill have recently expanded our Nursing Dementia
Suite and want to be able to make a difference to each and everyone who has Dementia; we know that is not possible but also know that by raising as much funds as we can to assist in the research for Alzheimer’s Dementia will in the long term pay endlessly.

So we move onto to a challenge inhouse; 2 marathons and 2
halves is equal to  78.6 miles, this challenge wasn’t big enough for the
home itself so we times it by 10…… YES that’s rights we challenge the home of Kents Hill (that’s staff, relatives and residents themselves) to complete a total of 786 miles whilst walking, running or cycling in the home or send us a screen shot of your miles outdoors.  We will have in reception a treadmill and bike to use (COVID cleaning schedules will be in place), the garden space to walk around and also the corridors in house.

We have partnered up with the local Engerie Fitness gym in Brooklands who is also joining in with the fundraising; they are seeing if they can beat our miles at the home over the course of a weekend (17th & 18th April).  Do you think they can beat 786miles!

A local childminding group are walking a mile on Wednesday 14th April for the charity and a member of staff is challenging herself to walk 21 miles for the charity also on the week of 12th April.

Lots of challenges happening please help us support this fantastic charity, United we stand into researching for a cure ♥

Thank you Sarah (Kents Hill Care Home)
