We fund research into cleft lip and palate to treat and prevent cleft deformities

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am very fortunate to be a small part of a team of amazing people who work together to treat and support children and adults with cleft lip and palate . I was inspired as a trainee working with the North Thames Cleft Team at Great Ormond Street in 2003 and was delighted to be able to join the South Thames Team in 2009 , based at Evelina London, as one of two Orthodontic Consultants.

Cleft lip and palate afftects 1 in 700 babies born in the UK . In most cases, a cleft occurs as a random event and so it comes as a suprise to the parents and families of babies, either at the 20 week scan or at birth. Having a baby with cleft lip and or palate changes the journey that those parents and their new baby go on as most children would have one or two operations before the age of one and then may potentially go on to have further surgery, speech therapy and orthodontics.

CLEFT is a charity set up by the North Thames Team and it works to  fund research into cleft lip and palate to answer the questions that both the families and the clinicians wish to answer. Ultimately, the research will help us to provide better care.

I am so grateful for any donation that you can give.

CLEFT aims to research the unanswered problems in improving care for children born with cleft lip and palate. We aim to push the boundaries of conventional treatment by funding research into improving operating techniques and by looking at the underlying reasons for cleft deformities.
