Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page.
I am 50 years old this year and a number of people have kindly asked what gift I would like for my special birthday!
It would be wonderful, rather than people buying me something, if we could collectively raise the money for a child to attend a holiday camp in Heswall on the Wirral this summer. (My home town).
It costs £500 for each child to come to the holiday camp. The Charity needs to raise at least £30,000 each year to provide wonderful experiences for children across the country.
This Charity , The Heswall Disabled Children’s Holiday Fund. HDCHF, is one that is close to my heart. My Dad, Alastair Shaw was one of the founders of the HDCHF in 1962 and was treasurer and on the committee all his life. My Dad contracted Polio when he was 18 and was sadly never able to walk again. Life changing as you can imagine. He decided along with a few others to set up this Charity which enabled children who had contracted Polio, to have a week’s holiday every summer on the Wirral in Heswall. The Charity is now in its 57th year and runs holidays for children with all disabilities. The Camp is run by volunteers, many of whom are based in Bristol due to links with Bristol University. The volunteers give up a week in August to provide this wonderful experience and enjoy it so much themselves they come back year after year to help! The children have the opportunity to visit Chester Zoo, the cinema, an aquarium, the Liverpool museum, go Kayaking, climbing and the list goes on. Last year the theme was a music festival and this year it is Harry Potter so there will be plenty of magic and science! Gradually the charity is expanding to offer day trips out across the UK. Soon a group of local children will have a day out flying in Gloucester.
So please donate whatever you can to enable children funded by HDCHF to go away together and have a fun filled week this summer.
