Story

I am raising money for Macmillan in memory of my Brother-in-Law Kim.  On Christmas Day 2013 my brother-in-law came to see us as he did every year.  The children were looking forward to seeing their "Unky Kim" as he was known.  It was especialy important this year because he was on his own at home - his wife was on holiday in Spain and we didn't want him to be alone over the festive period.  Kim walked thorugh the door but it wasn't Kim, instead this stick thin yellow man who was all teeth walked into the room.  It took our breath away, how was it that this vibrant man in a few months had been reduced to a shadow of his former self.  Kim protested that he had lost weight because he was cooking for himself and had stopped eating bread, potatoes etc.  On New Years Day after much discussion (and a bit of shouting from Kim!) one of my children, my son Freddie, and my wife, took Kim to the Doctor for an emergancy appointment.  The Doctor told him that it might be cancer but that was a very big word and that there was a lot that could be done for cancer now.  And so our Cancer journey had begun although we didn't know for sure for another 14 days.

The hotel was open for NYE and although we asked Kim to spend it here, he was adamant that he could not leave his dogs alone.  At 10pm he rang to say that he was comfortable and content alone in his house with his dogs, a bottle of Guinuess and the TV on.  It breaks our hearts that he spent his last Christmas and New Year here on earth alone with what ever thoughts must have been going through his head.

On the 14 January Kim was given his confirmed diagnosis - Yes it was cancer.  He asked how bad - It is terminal - he asked how long - till Easter.  Nine days later my wonderful Brother-in-Law died.  Nine days from confirmed diagnosis to death.  We spent as much time with him as we could.  From early morning to late at night.  One night at about 11.30 Kim told us that we really must go back to the children.  He said that although we should go from the moment we walked out the door he would miss us.  Kim has walked though his final door and we miss him so very much.  During those days we talked.  We laughed.  We cried and we talked some more - lots of love was around Kim, myself, my wife and of course my children.  Kim talked to them each on their own giving them their own special memories of their precious Uncle.  He said of the children that if he had ever had his own they could not be any better than Josh, Kristian, Freds, Archie, Noah and Lola.  They miss him but are all the better for having had Kim in their lives even for such a short time.

My boys and I carried Kim into the Crematorium for his last journey and I was so very proud of them as I know he would have been.  I also know that he would have been proud of me undertaking the London 2015 Marathon but he would also have laughed long and hard and not necessarily with me but more than likely at me!!  For us there wasn't really time to have any help from Macmillan but my wife has found it a tremendious source of comfort after Kim died.  If I can help raise funds so that this excellent charity can be there to help others that have had to walk the dark path that is Cancer and light the way a little bit then I'm going to do all I can and if you could bring yourself to sponsoring me any amount at all - all will be gratefully received.  Thanking you in advance - Sean Evans and my whole family
