Completing the London Marathon in April was a very proud moment. It's mad I know but I have decided to cycle the Coast to Coast route in one day and therefore try to raise the additional funds needed to pay for a day at Claire House. I want to mark the event by trying to make a difference for a charity, Claire House Children's Hospice. I have chosen them because friends of mine had their life turned upside down and Claire House were there to help them.
Their daughter Libby was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma cancer aged 16 months in April 2008. Following a year of therapy and numerous surgical interventions it was established that the cancer was incurable. Libby died at Claire House Children’s Hospice on 15th August 2009 aged 2 years, 8 months and 8 days.
Having spent a family respite weekend at Claire House in May 2009 they decided that they wanted to be at Claire House for Libby’s end of life care. The care shown to Libby during her last 8 days was nothing short of excellent. But much more than that was the care shown to them all as a family during what was an extremely distressing time. The most important aspect of this time was that Libby’s medical needs were completely taken care and this allowed Dave, Pip, and Ben the unforgettable opportunity to be nothing more than her Mummy, Brother and Daddy.
Claire House has continued to support them through their bereavement and I have witnessed how amazing and necessary this has been. I recently visited the hospice and was blown away by the care and commitment the staff give to the children and families they help.
I need all the help possible to get through my training plan and the marathon itself. Your kind donations will be the motivation I need to achieve my aim to make a difference to Claire House and their families!!
Thank you so much,
Steve
