My son, Alex, died, aged 4, in September 2012, after a 2 1/2 year battle with neuroblastoma, a rare but extremely aggressive childhood cancer.

The day after Alex's funeral, feeling empty, exhausted and pretty much lost, my wife, Sarah, and I decided to go along to Maggie's drop in centre in Edinburgh.  We had no expectation that anyone would be able to help us, but figured it couldn't hurt.

Nearly 18 months later, I can honestly say that Sarah and I, as individuals and as a couple, could not have made it to where we are today without the support and guidance we've had from the people at Maggie's. 

It is difficult to put into words just how valuable this charity has been for us, but having seen it close up on a weekly basis over the last year and a half, suffice to say the work they do both for people suffering from cancer, and for others whose lives have been affected by cancer, is amazing.

Team Alex took on Maggie's Monster Bike n Hike challenge in 2013 as part of 500 for Alex, and I'm delighted to confirm that we're back for more in 2014. It's a serious physical and mental challenge covering 72 miles in a day, but it's a brilliant event which everyone should take on at least once!

I know many people will have already given most generously to the 500 for Alex challenge site, which raised over £7500 last year for the Neuroblastoma Society, but if you can spare a few quid this year, please sponsor us for this fantastic charity.
