Story

At long last the “Camino” continues.

As many of you will remember I set out on this journey in September 2019 which seems such a long time ago. Unfortunately, the pandemic and an injury has meant that only now (3 years later) the journey continues.

Many of you will know that El Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage and passes through the north of Spain from St Jean Pied de Port in the French Pyrenees due west through Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos, Leon  and on to Santiago de Compostela itself.

It is a journey of around 805km (500 miles) with a variety of routes. The most significant of these is the “Camino Frances”. It is recognised as the most popular Christian pilgrim route in the world. There are around 1,800 buildings of great significant interest along the route and it was inscribed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1993.

I completed the first section of the route in September 2019 (just under 300km) and covered the journey as far as Burgos.

In September this year I’m going to continue from Burgos to Leon (188km) leaving me the final section (approx. 320km) to complete in 2023.

As I did for my first walk I will post updates on my progress so if you wish please check my progress on my LinkedIn, Just giving and Facebook page, Loch Insh Outdoor Centre will also be posting progress updates on their Facebook page.

For the first part of my ‘Camino’ I supported Teapot Trust - this year I am raising money for Dementia Adventure.

900,000 people in the UK live with dementia: a diagnosis that often leads to isolation indoors. Dementia Adventure thinks differently about dementia. Our positive focus is on the individual, not the condition. Connection with nature has positive health benefits and can even slow down the progression of dementia symptoms. Through our holidays, training and research, we remove barriers, improve confidence, and increase opportunities for people to stay active, keep connected to family and friends, and retain a sense of adventure in their lives.

My Mother lived with dementia in the latter part of her life and I would like to do this in her memory. She loved walking !

If you feel you can - any donation would be greatly appreciated- thank you for your support.
