At the end of 2018 I agreed to front up our Wood, Europe & Africa campaign to support Sue Ryder to extend and refurbish their fantastic Dee View Court, Neurological Care Centre in Aberdeen. (For more detail see below or go to https://www.sueryder.org)

We have set ourselves an ambitious target to raise £100k over the next 12 -18 months and since communicating this earlier this month have had a terrific response, with lots of great ideas put forward and many events already planned.

In December last year we lost my brother Will to a brain stem stroke and devastated as I was with that, it has made me doubly determined to raise the cash needed for this very worthy centre, a place that had he survived Will might well have needed.

So in true Blue Peter style I have agreed to lots of activities in 2019, such as; Super Hero Abseiling, Marathon Kilt walk, Meet in the middle cycling event, etc. (John Noakes eat your heart out!) and want to try and raise £5k towards our Wood total, so please donate generously as it's all in Wills name!

Thanks in advance for your support...

Luv,

Tom, Tommy, Tam (You choose which one fits)

xx

Sue Ryder Dee View Court

Building a Bigger Home

Executive summary

Sue Ryder Dee View Court in Aberdeen is Scotland’s only purpose-built specialist neurological care centre. As the only centre of its kind, the waiting list for a place at Dee View Court is always full, and today it is a list of 36 people and growing. To reach more people, we desperately need to expand.

We plan to extend Dee View Court to provide much needed specialist care for another 20 people at any one time, and up to 55 people a year, enabling more people with neurological conditions to have choice, be as independent as possible and maximise their potential.

Our £3.9 million expansion appeal launched in mid-2017.   Just over a year into the Appeal, and with over £2.4 million secured in pledges and
donations, the Trustees of Sue Ryder gave the go ahead to start construction and building work started in August 2018. We urgently need to secure the remaining £1.5 million to ensure we can complete the project on time.  Support from Wood. will give the appeal the boost it needs and help us to build a lasting legacy in Aberdeen.

Please support
our Appeal to build even better futures.

About Sue Ryder

Established in 1953, Sue Ryder is a national health and social care charity that provides care from our seven hospices, four neurological centres and for people in their own homes. We support people through the most difficult times of their life. Whether that’s a terminal illness, the loss of a loved one, or a neurological condition – we’re there when it matters.

Sue Ryder Dee View Court

Built in 2003 Dee View Court is the only purpose built specialist neurological care centre in Scotland. Based in Aberdeen, it is home to 24 people aged 18-65, and offers 24/7 specialist care to people living with complex and progressive neurological conditions including multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, and motor neurone disease, as well as acquired brain conditions such as stroke or a spinal injury.  At Dee View Court we strive to provide a safe environment where residents receive the specialist medical care they need, whilst helping them to live as full and independent a life as possible. At Dee View Court we see the person, not the condition.

The Need for Dee View Court

As Scotland’s only purpose-built neurological care centre of its kind, demand for a place is high.   Because of the long-term residency of the people who live at Dee View Court, places rarely become available, and our waiting list currently sits at 36 people and continues to rise. We know the actual need far outweighs 36, with there being a higher prevalence of people in the Grampian region living with multiple sclerosis and Huntington’s disease than anywhere else in Scotland, and health professionals are often reluctant to refer people to us as they know places are so infrequently available. 2

We also know that there are approximately 1,000 people with very severe needs in Scotland who have already spent years in a hospital bed or are living in inappropriate settings such as in older people’s care homes or psychiatric wards. In order to reach more people who need our support, we desperately need to expand Dee View Court. We want and need to do more to ensure those on our waiting list and others currently living in unsuitable accommodation can get the expert care they need and deserve to thrive and live well.
