Story
A couple of months ago I suffered a brief detachment from reality. Health experts believe it was brought on by a combination of things – impending(?) middle age and a touch of machismo being the main contributing factors. Thankfully all is now OK but one unfortunate and lingering result is that, upon emerging, I found myself signed up for the “Pays d’Aix IRONMAN 70.3” which takes place on the 1st of May this year….
This is a “medium distance triathlon” (feels bloody long to me), consisting of a 2km open-water swim, followed by a 90km bike ride through the local mountains (including the Col du Cengle at 1,650ft) and finishing off with a half marathon (21.1km to be exact). There is a cut off time of 8h 30mins. My aim is to finish it in 8h 29 mins - if possible.
Training has been tough to say the least. Humiliating is another word, as this challenge requires me to wear not just lycra, but also neoprene.
In order to generate some greater good from all of this effort I am aiming to raise money in memory of Chloe Mansfield, the daughter of a good friend who passed away while still only a baby - and also in recognition and support of the unbelievable care and professionalism of all the doctors, nurses and support staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital who treated her.
Chloe was born on 22 February 2012 and all was great, but at the age of only 11 weeks Chloe suffered a massive respiratory collapse, and was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Whilst Chloe survived this initial collapse, she would never again breathe unassisted. Chloe was subsequently diagnosed as having a rare and incurable lung condition, and finally passed away on her nine-month birthday. I am told that during her 6 months in hospital Chloe received the most fantastic care and treatment that could be expected.
All the money raised will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital. They are in great need of funds in order to continue to provide the amazing treatment, research and care that so many sick children need.
I hope you agree that this is a worthy cause, and thank you for your generosity and support.
