Team Hatch 2022 · 1 January 2022 to 1 December 2022 ·

In 2025 Team Hatch will again take on a series of epic challenges to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity.

Story

On Sunday 5th September I will be taking part in 'Challenge Roth'. A triathlon in and around Roth bei Nürnberg, Bavaria, Germany.

For those of you less accustomed to long distance triathlon (or 'Ironman') the event encompasses a continuous:

  • 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim along the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal
  • 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride
  • 26.22-mile (42.20 km) marathon

While many of you know I do enjoy each of these pastimes, which keep me healthy and happy, taking on an Ironman is a different beast entirely. 'Beast' being the operative word.

So why do it? It's a very good question and not a decision I took lightly. Back in 2017, while coming to the end of a particularly exhausting indoor cycling session, I met James Hatchley. While every triathlete has their own story, I was particularly moved by James' journey. James lost his daughter, Emma Rose, at the age of 15 to an extremely rare disease called Churg-Strauss Syndrome (a form of vasculitis). Emma's health had unexpectedly deteriorated in early 2014 and upon being sent for a medical review at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), she suffered sudden and unexpected heart failure. Unbeknown to anyone, Emma's condition had badly damaged her heart and other organs and despite the work of the wonderful staff at GOSH, Emma's heart could not be saved. Emma was lucky enough to be given a transplant, but unfortunately it was not enough to save her and after 102 days, after a very brave battle, Emma sadly passed away on 30th May 2014.

James Hatchley took up triathlon and leads Team Hatch to raise money for GOSH in memory of Emma. The funds raised will be used to transform the health and wellbeing of children and young people. Donations will specifically help to fund advanced life saving medical equipment, child and family support services, pioneering research and the rebuilding and refurbishment of the Hospital.

Originally planned for the 5th July 2020, and with a few lockdowns in between, I will finally attempt this mammoth challenge and safe to say it's going to be a very tough day out!

Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your support.
