I have opened a Just Giving Page in aid of the East Anglia Air Ambulance (EAAA) who last August were part of a team that helped save my life.
As a relatively fit 58 year old who enjoys swimming, walking and cycling I certainly didn't see a cardiac arrest coming. But it did and I survived due to series of events, supported by a bit of luck.
- It all started round 8.30am on a Saturday morning after I'd been out for a walk.
- I collapsed in the kitchen at home - there was no previous indication of ill health.
- First responder arrived while my wife was still on the 999 call
- I was shocked with the AED 3 times, as well as being given assistance from the Lucas chest compression machine.
- Soon the paramedics called the support of the EAAA whose doctor led a process that stabilise me before I was airlifted to Basildon Cardiac Centre, where I had a tracheotomy; as well as a stent and balloon fitted.
- After 3.5weeks in a medical coma at Basildon, during which time I suffered a perforated bowel and had an emergency operation which resulted in a stoma I was transferred to my local hospital at Bury St. Edmunds.
Without the speed of the EAAA things would have been so different:
- 13mins to fly from Cambridge to my home in Sudbury (60mins by road)
- 15mins to fly from Sudbury to Basildon (90mins by road)
