A couple of years ago a colleague set about an amazing quest to aid African children who have no access to education. Following a stint teaching in Zambia my friend Vineet created the Shine charity in January 2007 in close collaboration with the local community. The charity currently puts 60 children through their education in a small rented house in the township of Kalikiliki in the suburbs of the Zambian capital Lusaka. The state education system only has enough places for approximately 40% of the population in this area, and Shine targets orphans and vulnerable children with a view to giving them a real opportunity in life.
Shine is now in the process of building it's first literacy academy which will provide education for 250 pupils - but we need money to fund this project, both in the initial building of the school and the subsequent running costs. This project will have a massive impact on the local community.
We have a team of five riders riding from Land's End to John O'Groats starting on September 14th 2008, and I'm hoping that between us we can raise in excess of £15,000 which would pay for the first phase of the school building - 4 classrooms and the sanitation block. The provision of the school will create a lasting legacy for the community for a whole generation and beyond and it will also provide the only library in the township.
