Story
My aim is to bring British Sign Language to the forefront in BCUHB. Using BSL as a supportive language for people who are deaf, or communicating in BSL with a member of the Deaf community, is important to embrace social inclusion in our society. In Wales, BSL is soon to become a modern language choice for school children. My aim is to bring an opportunity for BCUHB Mental Health staff to learn BSL, to support families who use this visual language and In time it could provide career prospects for those who are d/Deaf if everyone embraces BSL as a rich cultural language. I am a member of the British and European Societies for Mental Health and Deafness, a Bevan Commission Exemplar plus a BCUHB Equality Champion. I want to encourage equal health care for patients who are Deaf or hard of hearing and start a Deaf Mental Health service at BCUHB.
