Story
I turned 50 in 2022 and decided I needed a challenge, something to focus on, something to achieve. The Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdowns meant my event catering business, Epicurus basically stopped trading for nearly two years. To alleviate boredom, for exercise and to try and stay sane, I started running. I loved it and found it great for my mental health so started entering races and running more. I went from not being able to run 5K in Jan 2021 to running a 50k ultra by July 2021. I then had the bonkers idea of competing in 5 ultra-marathons this year – one for each decade of my life! Why ever not?
I am now competing in the following races this year:
April – The Isle of Arran Ultra Day 1 (30 miles)
April – The Isle of Arran Ultra Day 2 (30 miles)
June – The Montane Summer Spine Challenger (108 miles)
September – The Lap, Windermere (47 miles)
December – The Montane Cheviot Goat (55 miles)
I decided to help and raise money for the charity Anxious Minds through these challenges. I wanted to support a local charity that supports mental health and suicide awareness. I was particularly taken with their work in embracing the outdoors as a form of therapy for mental health; something I attempt to offer through my Fells' Kitchen adventure days.
