ATD Fourth World works in partnership with people living in poverty, supporting their efforts to build a better future for their children and family. By ensuring that their voice is heard and their views taken on board, the charity aims to bring real and lasting change to people's lives.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

, near Camberwell Green in , is not only ATD Fourth World’s national administration centre, it is also at the centre of our projects and the actions we are committed to with the families. The Georgian building facing the peaceful square, on the edge of Burgess Park, is for many families living in poverty a place where they find friendship and advice, a place where their voices are heard and respected, and a place where they are able to learn from each other and share their own skills and talents. As one family activist said,

“I have been going to for16 years, and I still look forward to going there. Sometimes its hard to get there, I feel so unsafe on my estate, but I know it is worth it because I see my friends and feel safe when I arrive. I have made so many friends there over the years and learnt so much.

The kitchen at is the heart of our house. When the families call in to share their concerns or ask for support and advice, it is with a cup of tea in the kitchen/dinning area where they are welcomed. The kitchen also plays a really important role in our projects, whether that is the Thematic and Policy Development Workshops, Skill-Sharing, Family Learning or Family Support.

On the days of the Thematic and Policy Workshops, the team at welcomes on average 20 participants. The families are empowered through expressing their views and offering solutions to policy makers on issues affecting their lives. As part of the day, lunch and refreshments are prepared by other activists with members of the team. Preparing a meal for friends can be an important experience for people who rarely get the chance to show their abilities. Rebecca, a mum of five came to one day and cooked her speciality dish of jerk chicken for 20 people, everyone said it was delicious. Later, Rebecca said:

“It was amazing to see so many of my friends getting together at and eating my chicken. They all loved it! At home as a family we rarely eat together, so having a social time like this, all sitting together and eating, chatting and sharing food, it was really special. I felt so proud that I could give something back to all my friends at .”

These are a few examples of why the kitchen plays an important role in our house. Over the years it has had a lick of paint here and there, but it has not had a major renovation for nearly 25 years. We need to replace the oven, all the work units, pots and pans, cutlery and crockery, sink units, refrigerator and freezer, and decorate. When Rebecca got involved in preparing lunch, it had a big effect on her. She felt important and valued. Renovating the kitchen at Addington Square will alow many other families to share positive experiences, through learning about nutrition and preparing meals for meetings and events.  To make this a reality we need your help to raise £20,000. Please give generously.
