Story

Steve and I proudly completed the 'London 100' in a time of 8 hours 1 minute and 13 seconds.

We thank everyone for their support, encouragement and sponsorship.

Steve and I are cycling the 'London 100' event on Sunday 4th August.  We are currently training 3 times per week and are also doing one spinning session in the gym.  We will be leaving home at about 3am and will start the course at approximately 8am in the Olympic Park.  We hope to finish in under 9 hours in the Mall and hope for a sunny day with a bit of a breeze to cool us down!  We think about 30,000 cyclists should be there on the day, in what promises to be an exciting challenge, with a great atmosphere.  We hope to enjoy ourselves, rise to this challenge and hopefully raise some more funds for BSVI.

An update for all my supporters – Steve and I finished The Dorset Knobbler event on the tandem in 6 hours on Sunday – it was a very enjoyable ride on a lovely sunny day and I went to parts of Dorset I had never been to before.  There were many ‘highs’ – there were lots of steep hills to go up and down!  My pilot was able to appreciate the scenery and acted like a Tour Guide, describing the villages that we rode through.  I thoroughly enjoyed the event but it was quite a pleasure to get off the saddle at the end!

We are now going to start training for the London 100 event in August.  I would like to thank everyone for sponsoring me and I am glad that members of BSVI will be able to benefit from my fundraising and have opportunities of future sporting activities.  I will keep you updated with our future plans.

Hello, my name is Barbara Russell and I am a 57 year old blind lady. I have a genetic eye condition  - my brother and I had sight problems during a happy childhood and I lost my sight completely in my late teens.  I have always had a positive outlook on life and my lack of sight has not deterred me from leading a full and independent life.  I am married to Peter who, at the age of 5 lost his sight through meningitis.  We have one son who has been encouraged to live with a similar positive attitude to his own sight problems.

I have completed several sporting events in the past, including a Tandem Parachute Jump, Abseiling at Tower Park and the London Marathon in 1989.

I have been a Volunteer Receptionist and Trustee of BSVI for 10 years. Our Charity offers many services, both  at our Centre and out in the community, to assist local visually impaired people in their daily lives.

In 1998 when I came along to the then Bournemouth Blind Aid Society's Open Day, I first had the opportunity to experience tandem cycling.  I now cycle twice a week with BSVI volunteer Steve Shuck, both for pleasure and to train for upcoming sponsored events.

We cycled the 62 mile Dorset Knobbler in the Purbecks on 21st April.  This event was organised by the Steve Bernard Foundation, who generously donated two brand new tandems to our Charity, which will enable more visually impaired people to take up the sport.
