March 2022 has marked the start of a 630-mile challenge for Lanivet’s Patrick Townsend when every step he takes along the South West coastal path will raise funds for the Royal Marines Charity and Lanivet Community Hall.
Not only will this former Royal Marine be taking on the challenge of hiking the longest waymarked trail in the UK, from Minehead in Somerset to Poole in Dorset, but in true military style he is carrying a 15kg backpack, tent and sleeping bag.
“It's a challenge I've been thinking about for a while,” said Patrick, “and now that I'm retired and still healthy this is the time to do it and what better incentive than to be raising funds for two fantastic causes.
“You may have seen me out around the area with my ex-military bergen, training for this,” he added. “I've been carrying about 15kg, getting myself used to the weight and restoring my fitness.
"In the 1970s I served in the Royal Marines and carried more weight than this on many occasions especially in Arctic Norway. Forty years on and it's taking a bit of getting used to but I'm now confident with my ability and a good walk and rest regime that I can do it.”
Patrick is aiming to complete weekly sections of around 90 miles.
“I hope to be as far as Plymouth before the winter and then complete the rest in 2023,” he explained.
Patrick and his wife Frances moved to Lanivet in 2014 and have been fully supportive of village life.
“We still can't believe how lucky we are to live in such a welcoming, community orientated village,” he said. “I’ve been involved with maintenance work for the Parish Council and the Community Centre. It's been great to see how liked and used the One for All is but it does need money to keep it going so with your support I will try to raise some much needed funds for the hall alongside the Royal Marines Charity.
“Both causes are close to my heart,” he said. “The hall is an integral part of the village and community and a lifeline for so many, but it doesn’t run on thin air and is always in need of financial support."
